Living next door to a fire station is always a treat. My little girl always loves to hear the wail of the siren. Most of the time she says, 'Uh oh, someone's in trouble'. Today she asked me why they do that when the fire trucks and ambulances first come out of the station house. I told her that means they are 'running hot', rushing to a scene. She's very inquisitive as most 9 year olds are and loves watching shows like 'Trauma in the ER', ER, Ocean Force, all these rescue shows. Her step dad is a paramedic and she looks up to him and thinks it's cool. She told me a couple of days ago she wants to be a paramedic.
Good for her!! Whatever she wants to do with her life, that's fine with me. One day when she is older I will talk to her and I'm sure her step dad will talk to her too. It's not all the 'glory' it's made out to be. It's hard work. It's emotionally, mentally and physically challenging. She's a tough little girl. She can do anything she wants.
A couple of months ago was safety awareness day at the fire station and they had displays and re-enactments of all kinds. She was thrilled when the firefighters were fighting a 'propane' tank fire and doing other skills to show the public what they do in the real world. The firemen and paramedics just ate her up because she was so inquisitive and had so many questions and was just being her cute adorable self. She wanted to know what everything was on the fire trucks and in the ambulances.
One Captain joked with her and said he would pay her 50$ to climb the ladder truck to the top. He almost regretted that comment because she took the bet, but I stopped her knowing full well that was against regulations and that he was teasing. I think maybe he thought she would be too chicken. But he seemed genuinely shocked when she said 'OK'. Never bet a rambunctious little girl to climb a 50 foot ladder. She might just take you up on that bet!
