The crew at Calder EMS is working on changing a few things. New training and equipment is soon to hit the shelves of our small department. In these hard times its hard to find the funds. Do you guys think the government should assist small departments like Calder EMS with tax breaks on supplies and fuel. Even though Calder EMS is owned by a private company does not mean its getting the equipment needed to perform at its max.

In 2005, Vermont (I worked there at the time) sent a 12 ambulance task force to Texas in support of operations for Hurricane Rita; after Hurricane Katrina messed up four other states. ALL the units that volunteered to go were from private agencies! The Vermont Public Health Dept provided awesome support to those crews, including shipping medications from Vt to TX when the crews were unable to obtain them locally. This was a real example of cooperation between state and private agencies. Thanks, Dan Manz!

Thanks for the info. Its sometimes ironic that private companies step forward in times of need and get the shoulder when it comes to funding. Does anyone out there actually believe that a private company should learn to manage on there own? If so... should they assist the county and government employees during times of need? It would be heartless to turn a cold shoulder.

Perils of private EMS. . .

Welcome to the struggle of EMS, and even after 35 years in EMS, I am still torn about the function of "gov't" in private enterprise. In general, no, it is not the role of the gov't to fund a private enterprise, but some receive large subsidies and would not be there without them. Still. . .
