FEAR AND HATE ARE "THE MIND KILLERS"
All that we hope for will be lost if we allow ourselves to be consumed or motivated by our fears and stumble into the dark and unproductive realm of hatred.
REVENGE is an extension of HATRED, it will consume spiritual energy we need to produce positive results in working, playing, creating art and learning to love ourselves. If we can not truly love ourselves then we are lost.
Once we are lost then the following words become… Continue

I sit here at my "computer keyboard" trying to force a worthy thought to put on a blog for our fallen comrade, Tom Clements. Then it dawns on me that nothing needs to be forced, just do it. and do it from the heart. So this is my personal ulogy for Tom Clements. Tom passed away in the night a few days ago and was found by a loved one in the morning. His passing was not expected, and took us all by surprise. To talk about a man who was friends to so many and knew so many that I do not, is a hard… Continue

Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country. No...that wasn't a typing test, it is an old statement that still rings true in times of adversity and desperation . In times of a leaderless societies that have thousands of followers relying on their quality of decision making. Everyone knows what EMS faces across the country and everyone knows what we face here in the Maricopa County Arena. But it goes unsaid, unaddressed, it's the big… Continue

I just returned from the 39th annual Wyoming Trauma Conference. It was held the weekend of August 20th through the 23rd at Little America in Cheyenne, Wyoming. What a great time. The conference committee did a fantastic job of putting everything together and made it run like a well oiled clock. (do you oil clocks any more?)
Speakers from around Wyoming and country offered informational sessions. There was a Prehospital Trauma Life Support Class (PHTLS) course and an Advance Burn Life… Continue

Hi all! Just wanted to give all an update on what's been going on the last little while. Quite an emotional rollercoaster for sure...
Last week, I got to give morphine for the first time as a paramedic. No biggy to most, but surely a first in my paramedic career portion. Had given bunches of drugs and narcs during internship, but it's a little different when it's finally your choice, not the doctor's orders at the ER. Pt had a broken ankle (from a standing position...Hmmm...) and I… Continue

I had heard before coming to the National Association of EMS Educators conference here in Orlando, Fla., that the number of required course hours for the new Advanced EMT level under the EMS Education Agenda was going to be a hot topic. So I had my ears pricked when I stepped into “One Year Later—Education Standards & Education Agenda, Where Are We?” given by Deb Cason, past president of NAEMSE. And by the looks of it, so were everyone else’s. No sleeping, no sneaking out, no checking… Continue

I have just fabricated, for my locker, a toiletry holder fashioned out of emesis bags (yes, unused) and felt an inappropriate amount of pride in myself. Anyone else have ideas for non-productive around-the-station amusement?

I have something I wanted to throw out there. An option to reign in costs and provide coverage is to have companies contract with hospitals directly to provide health coverage to thier employees. In this way, you would not need a private insurance company because the company would be in a contract with a hospital or hospital group. Then you keep Medicare for those who are elderly and/or disabled. If a company doesn't have the resources on thier own to enter a contract with a hospital, then the… Continue

On August 17th at 5:45, I held my eldest dog, Angie, as she took her last breath. I rubbed her gently behind the ears and kissed her forehead, taking in as much of her as I could before I let the technicians take her away. In the 36 hours since I let them lift her out of my arms, I've been wandering around the house looking for things she might have left around–clumps of hair, a toy, a half-chewed bone, a hidden towel. There was nothing. Absolutely nothing. It was the first time in my life I… Continue

O.K. while we are all in the middle of “healthcare reform” has any one given thought on how your communities would, could and should benefit from this concept? There are several models to look at around the world, but will any of them work here in the U.S. As we set and all go through the “healthcare reform” quagmire, can we think of what would benefit our communities and our patients at this level?
Is there any place for this in your community? and if so, what are you doing to… Continue

Ok so maybe that's not a word, but you probably get the point. The Fututre of EMS is ripe for advancement with suggestions of critical care medics, home health medics, EMS specialist and new ways of looking at the delivery models we now use. I feel the placement of the "United States EMS Administration" is long overdue. There are several options to this scenario, but I feel EMS and Public safety will be best served if EMS is a stand alone agency. After all it's Health care, and I can see we all… Continue

(as described by my old EMS teacher, along with, sadly enough, the disclaimer that these are only a joke, and should NOT be tried *sigh*)
1: If you are choking on an ice cube, don't panic. Simply pour a cup of boiling water down your throat, and presto! The blockage will be almost instantly removed.
2: Clumsy? Avoid cutting yourself while slicing vegetables by getting someone else to hold them while you chop away.
3: Avoid arguments with your partner about using… Continue

It is a fact that the single most frustration issue when taking an emergency call is to get the caller's exact position.
I solved it by developing what is known in South Africa (where I live) the UPN Program; it is SMS-based.
UPN is an acronym for: Unique Position NUmber, Unique Personal Number and Unique Possession Number.
Position number: Say a private house is registered and say the UPN allocated is A1585.
The full address description including Longs and… Continue

As I get older, I seem to be less intolerant of irresponsible people
Topping that list of irresponsibility is deadbeat dads
Sometimes when you extend that olive branch you get smacked with it
The sun rising on a cloudless day is a beautiful thing
Having said that, I'm glad I work midnights so I see more of them
My kids, grandkids and my friends keep my heart warm and alive with love
Self infliction of pain does not change much… Continue

IS A NICE FOUR LETTER WORD
CAN BRING OUT THE BEST IN SOMEONE
MAY BRING A WORSE CASE SCENARIO TO A HAPPY OUTCOME

MAY BE TAKEN FOR GRANTED
MAY COME FROM ALL DIRECTIONS OR JUST ONE
IS AS CLOSE AS A PHONE CALL
MAY BE DRIVEN AWAY DUE TO PRIDE
KNOWS NO BOUNDARIES
IS AS SIMPLE AS IT IS COMPLEX
MAY BE HEALING
MAY BE ENABLING
MAY BE LENDING
MAY BE PROVIDING
