All true. But the question remains - what do you "get" for your accreditation, besides a nice decal for your truck and a pat on the back? In most states, there has to be a two-track process for hospitals. You can be JCAHO-accredited, or you can g...

Ben, I think that you have some mystical view of the activities of police officers that doesn't connect with reality. The "power of arrest" is not different from the "power to administer medicine" or any other power conferred by law or similar aut...

Your later point lost me, KC. I WAS a corpsman assigned to the Marines. I was a corpsman, period. Did I have the training and know-how to take care of myself in the Marine environment? Yep. Could I protect my patient? Yep! Did they count me when t...

In theory, great idea. Practically, maybe not so great. Start with the notion that communities need good EMS. An "ambulance service" is one part of that, but only one part. Depending on the design of the system, the ambulance service may make a d...

The "different tools" points don't make the case. The prevention argument doesn't work - all can do prevention. "..through foot patrols" isn't a substantive difference. You've simply focused on micro-examples, ignoring the essence of the argumen...

Situational Awareness, Scene Safety, and Prayers for Comrades

What a week. Friday a mass shooting in Binghamton, NY, and today three police officers killed in Pittsburgh, PA. Following the week when 8 were murdered in a nursing home in Carthage, NC. Please keep the families of the fallen officers, and our EMS colleagues who had to respond to thesescenes, in our thoughts and prayers.

So - how do we help to prepare ourselves situations like this? And how do we keep ourselves from becoming victims?

We probably need to spend some time, with our colleagues, o… Continue

Embracing the "public safety" aspects - Steve Berry's closing keynote

In his closing keynote at EMS TODAY, Steve Berry (addressing public perception of EMS) urged listeners to adopt some of the professionalism of our public safety counterparts-- fire, law enforcement and the military. He believes we’re a mix of medical and public safety, but that in order to cement an image of EMS in the public’s mind, we should accept that the public affiliates us more with public safety than the medical profession, and we should work with that perception rather than against it.… Continue

The EMS Labor Movement - or Lack Thereof? What's the story?

Many of the posts on this network site, and others, bemoan the plight of poor, overworked, underpaid, and under-respected EMS providers.

Yet, the EMS community does not seem to have an active labor movement working to improve this environment.

I must confess that I'm not a union guy - I'm a chief in a right-to-work, no collective bargaining for public employees state. So the situation probably works to my advantage - maybe. But I am curious.

It seems that much of the economic and political su… Continue

What research would help us do EMS better?

I was reading the March 2009 issue of Prehospital Emergency Care (for those who don't read it, it is the major peer-review journal devoted to EMS in the US).

I was excited to see, buried amongst the clinical and pseudo-clinical research abstracts, a few studies that might help us run our services better. One was a before and after study of the impact of implementing power stretchers in a large county EMS agency.

We've gt a ton of clinical research going on - the physicians see to that. But how… Continue

Creating a "culture of safety" in the EMS community

Hate is a strong word.

I HATE hearing about medics getting injured, disabled, killed in the line of duty.

Since I play the bagpipes and I'm a public safety guy, I go to more than my fair share of public safety funerals. It is distressing to see the impact of these mostly-unnecessary, mostly-preventable deaths on friends, families, agencies, and communities. It's hardened me a good bit over the years - to the point where I don't feel at all bad about dropping the disciplinary hammer on a medic… Continue

Chief Kirkwood, I would enjoy having an informal discussion with you about Wake County EMS. I was considering relocating and applying to your organization, and I would love to know more about it. If it would be possible to do so, I would enjoy a discussion with you over email or phone. Thanks!

Mr Kirkwood, I wanted to write and say hello. Dont know if you remember me but I started a discussion over a month ago in regard to HIPAA and who may get information. I went with what you told me to my Chiefs. In short it did not go well. I was accused of not trusting my department in regard to leaving information with the assisted living facility as I was told. I was also suspended for 1 twenty four hour shoft pending approval by the city manager for violating an order to leave the information. Im a big boy and can live with whatever the ultimate decision is. I now you are an extremely busy man but would appreciate an opportunity to speak to you in more depth regarding this situation. If you feel that you cannot find the time or simply would like to remain uninvolved I understand. If this is something you can possibly offer more guidance about I would apprciate it

It was great to meet you at the recent EMS Leadership Symposium in lovely downtown New Britain! You are a very entertaining and engaging presenter with well thought out (and road tested) ideas that I am thrilled to take back to my organization as I continue my Sisyphus-like battle. Slainte agus tainte!

Skip,
Hi, my name is Stephen Brown. I am a Paramedic student at Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory, NC.
I would like to enlist your aid in finding the North Carolina traffic rules for an ambulance responing to a call while using lights and siren. Rules that govern allowable speed, right of way on the road and at intersections, ect. Our Paramedic program does include a semester of driving instruction, and we have been asked by the instructor to research North Carolina traffic saws for responding emergency vehicles. Information is scarce. Will you help? Thanks, Stephen (Lobo)

Hi Skip, where did you grow up near Buffalo? I grew up in Kenmore, went to high school at St. Joes and college at Canisius. I started working as a part time EMT with Twin City Ambulance in college and volunteered in Lancaster. At the time TCA covered the northern third of Buffalo, and I often worked out of ECMC. It was a lot of fun and some great partners taught me a lot.

EMS in Buffalo is in sad shape, and frankly I'm surprised it took this long for a scandal to make national headlines. I do miss Buffalo, but could never make a living as a paramedic there. Did you ever do EMS there?

Have a happy 4th, Sully

Looks good! I've been well, just busy. I'm all for employee recognition. We had our Second Chance Breakfast during EMS Week and Medal Day is June 3rd. Daily call volume has spiked over 4000 calls over the past few days so getting the kudos out to the troops is more important than ever.
