Hard Look

An acquaintance was killed Thursday night by a drunk driver. I had just seen her on Tuesday, and she was great as always, fifty-three, satisfied, quiet but confident. Sometimes it takes fifty-three years to achieve the peace and serenity that makes life so wonderful. She loved her granddaughter, who was in the car when the drunk driver crossed the line and killed her. The baby is okay, my friend is gone. And people continue to drive drunk, and most of us look the other way. Its only the…See More

The 12 Lead Tells the Story

When it comes to 12 lead EKG's I've been known to belittle the things, not because they are not worthy tools, and indispensable in the field, rather because once at the ER my interpertation of them is often ignored or barely recognized. That is the ER reality. More important than that, however, is the reality in the rescue, where there is no cath lab, no cardiac resident, no specialists-just you, the patient and your partner. There, the importance of the interpretation of the 12-lead cannot be…See More

EMS Writing

I've often wondered why I write about my experiences as an EMS provider. It is seldom easy, these stories I write down, and not without a fair amount of risk. I focus on the patients that cross my path, always finding something fascinating about them, or their condition. I am fortunate to work in a city that is diverse and vibrant, four major colleges are interspersed with a thriving nightclub district, world class restaurants, a burgeoning art community, and a population consisting of people…See More

http://www.emergencystuff.com/9781887321143.htmlI always thought that my job,or better yet-a day of my job, would make a great book. I had all of the ingredients for a good story, some crazy characters, life and death situations,  a ticking clock to add suspense, a pace that goes from auto-pilot to full throttle when you least expect it, and most importantly, a beginning, a middle, and an end. What seems a lifetime ago I decided to…See More
