Alright, I'm going way out on a limb here, but it seems like you want more members, so if (and only if) you'll have me I'd love to be a part of your group. I consider myself an Oregonian (Alumnus of South Eugene High School and U of O), and my hea...

I'm in favor of dropping the word "technician" from any title for a medical professional. A technician is by definition a non-professional, and a better way of refering to EMS professionals is simply "Paramedic", a term well recognized by the publ...

I agree with you with regard to Bob Davis's "Six Minutes to Live or Die" series. It was a gift to EMS, and contributed to the development of the Emory/CDC CARES Registry. There's no question that we need to start measuring our performance in EMS! It's no longer enough to claim that we're saving lives, whether it's cardiac arrest survival or RSI. We need to demonstrate it with data. Thanks for the thoughtful post(s).

Hey Mark: Things are really changing in Alberta. As of April 1/09 the Provincial gov't is going to taking over all the ground ambulances. It's goining to be a two year process, interm contacts during this transition period, then full control. We now are recongized under the Health professions Act which is leading to exciting changes for Paramedics in the province. It is however going to force Paramedics that are presently employed in fire-based EMS services to chose between fire and EMS. Gone are all the various health regions which has been replaced one superboard. No more service based dispatching, we are moving to a Provincial dispatch system. All the areas of the Province must have access to ALS ambulances, and Paramedics are going to be working in emergency departments of hospitals. As a consequence of all these changes, Paramedics will be in short supply. With only 5 or 6 schools in the Province not enough medics are graduating.

About Me
I find it interesting that a profession which has grown up with the space program, the computer revolution, and all of the innovations made in medical science over the past four decades has not developed a uniform, standard infrastructure for its administration and practice. In most of this country, the systems in place do not lend themselves to the the provision of optimum EMS. We need a national model for EMS! Toward this end, practioners, administration, and oversight need to become autonomous, self-regulating, and independent of fire departments and other entities that do not hold EMS to be their single, primary mission.

I Love Being in Fire/EMS Because
In EMS, one is able to make a difference at the moment that difference most needs to be made. No other profession provides that opportunity.

We can beat this to death. I concur there are 3rd services that do a great job. There are fire departments that are doing a bang up job. There are great medics and bad protocols and bad medics and good protocols. There are leaders that care and ma...
