"Does anyone know what states allow certs for IV? I am an EMT-B in Ohio. I have tried to find information on IV, CC, ST, but I can not find it for Ohio. Maybe it is not available in Ohio and that is why I can not find anything?"
"Ive been an EMT BASIC for the past 6 years in service..... and what a reward it was for me in terms of experience and good study cases. It would be nice to upgrade and learn to become an EMT Intermediate for a change (like learning to do IV, plus…"
"I.V.'s don't save lives. I've been a PCP for over 20 years in a fairly busy service 55,000 calls a year, with the 5 basic drugs I currently and I must say seldom use, I wonder the full value of full ACP in these finaciall restrictive…"
"I will be turning 48 in less than a month and have been a volunteer EMT-B where I live for the past five years. In my EMT class there were three people older than me! I am the old man on our crew, however."
"I started in EMS back in 1974 and still in it. I used to be an instructor in NYS and it was funny looking at the younger students and making the comment "I have been in EMS longer then you have been alive." Now in NC as an AEMT-I still…"
"I just turned 47. Been doing the job since age 20. I'm still on the street working a 24/48 schedule at a busy station as a frontline supervisor and paramedic. The older folks are the "counter-balance" for a young, inexperienced, and…"
"Hi Julie! My name is LeAnn Kimberlin, and I was exactly your age when I started my basic EMT class. I was a single mom of 3 and didn't get to do what I wanted till my children were grown. I am now 53 years young and I still love every minute of…"
"Best thing to do is join a local volunteer EMS service and they will sponser you for the class as Jen stated. Most full time services dont sponser, they are looking to hire already licensed EMTs & Medics."
"No,not graphic at all. If you are willing to text & drive, you should see what the consequences can look like. It is a bit long, but it gets the point across. I know I am guilty of texting & driving...never again!"
"I have not been a basic for long either and I am still in school for my degree in emergency medicine and Paramedic.. I am taking the IV certs as well just to have that little extra in hopes of finding a job. Here in Colorado I cant even get…"
I just graduated in May 2009 from my EMT Basic course.
I am starting in the EMT business a bit late in life - I am in my mid 40's. I am recently (almost) divorced and am now doing something I have wanted to do for many years! Don't get me wrong - I LOVE my day job, which I have had for more than 18 years... in healthcare.
Unit Clerk at the large Midwestern Hospital
I Love Being in EMS Because
I LOVE helping people. Although I will not get rich being an EMT - I LOVE IT!
Hey Julie! Thanks for the friend add, and the advice... and whatever path you choose in EMS, enjoy it completely, and always be safe (Yes, I preach the safety thing, lol). If I can ever return the "advice" favor, or you just need someone to listen, complain to, or cry on, I'm a decent listener. :D
I too would be interested in swapping patches with you. I am a paramedic in Montreal, Canada. I have been collecting for over 20 years and have well over 4,000 patches from all over the world. Please let me know if you are interested in swapping. Please stay safe out there!!
Hi Julie, Welcome to Jems. I'm not a fanatical collector and I've only been on this site for a short time myself but I have a modest collection of patches from around the world (mostly from the USA). People have asked me directly for a particular patch from my previous employer BHP Steel (which is / has not been readily available due to the contracting out of the ambulance service) and offered theirs in return. I have mostly fallen over people who want trades. I don't go out trying every day as it's not the most important thing in my life. There will always be someone out there who does not have your patch - so if you want to trade patches just ask people directly. I guess being in another country has its advantages as not everyone has the ability or opportunity to travel and be in the right place at the right time to pick up international patches. On the flip side I will eventually run out of swaps. Cheers Grizzly.
