I don't know about your company's policy, but the OSHA standard CFR 1910.1030 uses the phrase "reasonably anticipated" contact in its definition of "occupational exposure." The problem comes in what is "reasonable" to anticipate--if your pt is rel...

I completely agree that the initial contact needs gloves because of the unknown and that wasn't my argument. I'm talking more of either routine transports or after an assessment is made. I also consider the back of the ambulance to be a controlled...

Im sorry to disagree with you, but I have to agree with OSHA, the CDC, the NIH, and my companies policies here and say that gloves are required equipment in prehospital care anytime you make patient contact where there is a REMOTE chance that you ...

Does your pharmacist wear gloves? How about your private physician and his staff during every contact? Do physical therapists wear gloves during every patient contact? Why are nurses at dialysis clinics unafraid to shake the hands of their patient...

I've gotten to the point that I can't imagine touching a patient without a set of gloves on. Ick Ick ick.

Yea I have seen some idiot's do that.....but we change gloves a lot through out the call. Do you guys change gloves after initiating patient contact, or is it the same pair of gloves for the entire call? If they're anything like some of the goof...

Dan, It really depends on the call; About 95% of the time we just wear gloves.....But we have had calls where we had to use gloves, gown, mask. We do have a mandatory rule that before you step out of the truck you must have gloves on at all calls...

I work for 2, 911 services one that requires us to wear safety glasses on every call. I personally sweat in the humidity of the south as soon as I walk outside. I find that the glasses fog up and get in the way so most of the time unless something...

It's a great discussion point, but alot of providers only provide the bare minimums ( i.e. gloves, generic goggles, but not the disposable gowns or even disposable sleeves ), so the point becomes moot.

So you wear gloves, gown, mask, goggles on every medical call? Now that's a smidge over kill.

As a newly-licenced paramedic, I also agree that the current system is flawed. My clinicals alternated between extremely good and a few situations where I was the most-senior person on the truck...as a student. The problem isn't limited to the civ...

doc, You are also forgetting the relative call volumes and the effect they have. Law enforcement is the busiest function (crime fighting) so the cops have the least time to devote to other, non-crime-fighting functions. That makes it intutively o...
