Pascal, I know of a small city in Illinois that still has two ambulance services. One of which is a funeral home running basics / paramedics and pre-hospital R.N.s / basics or paramedics. They are a very good service.

The museum had a great exhibit at EMS Today. I took a few pictures of the old gear...brought back some good memories!

My first ambulance was a Caddie. The first "portable" monitor/defib that I used was a TeleCare (big orange box) with a radio inside. Huge thing that weighed about 45 lbs. I remember a radio system to call the hospitals was called the HEAR system. T…

Wow.. a few dusty memories stirred up here :-). I remember the intracardiac Epi (and actually giving it - it worked!). In our system at the time we placed subclavian and femoral lines too. Anyone remember the early Zoll external pacers? Also the siz…

first ambulance was an Oldsmobile similar to the Caddy which my boss totaled chasing the officer down call so we bought a window van with 2 seats and converted it into an ambulance in the next 24 hours. In the city where we worked the City only had…

Just got to the end of this page. Interesting experiences to be had. I love the way this thread is going. I never worked in it, but I have seen an old Packard ambulance that was in my home town in great shape. My first rides were in Oldsmobile & Cad…

Had an uncle who was a mortician. They had a blue green cadilliac I think was a 1962. Had one red federal beacon on top and an under the hood federal mechanical siren. Ran like a scalded gorilla. Had a one man body stretcher and a small oxygen bottl…

I remember those days. Grew up in Dallas. All the funeral homes ran different parts of the city. First ambulance I was on was a 1969 Oldsmobile high-top hearse-conversion. Had a Q2 on the roof and 3, 4-bulb beacons.

Is anyone out there old enough to recall funeral home ambulances?

We had the Datascope MD4 and the Life pack LP-4. The Datascope was far better but about the same size. I can still read a strip off of an LP4 screen. Matter of fact that was part of my oral review board was to read all of the rhythms off of an LP4.…

Those were great to put the fear of God into unruly patient. One look at that needle and they got right.

OKAY....lol...somebody hire me a fresh set of eyes. Having serious key issues today. Probably the best improvement I've noticed is not with equip. but rather in noise control. Oh, my aching ears!

LP-5 I remember when it was new.....Oh my! The first Monitor Life Pak-4 we had weighted about 75 pounds and was the size of a Microwave Oven. Oh my aching back. How about those RS-10 extrication kits! It didn't take to long to realize that RS stood…

Something New...

WOW, I guess I should write something new here since so much has happened since my last posting! Let's see..... I am now an F.T.O. [Field Training Officer], Celebrated 30 years of patient care, spent 3 weeks searching for a new beginning/fresh start/relocation and found my own paradise spot. I will be relocating this spring from Muskogee, OK to Kalispel, MT - I am so excited!!!! I have needed to make some serious changes in my life for a long while now and I finally got my act together and found… Continue

My First JEMS Blog (LOL)....

I guess I should put something here (LOL). Well - I am an NREMT-B in Oklahoma who is content to work for a private service that treats me well. I am blessed with some really fantastic friends and co-workers. Alas though, I am a widow and have nobody to share my life with. It's tough to find anyone who understands me or my chosen career field but I keep smiling and searching - someday my prince will arrive and sweep me off my ambulance (I mean my feet). I enjoy meeting and talking with people fro… Continue

Thanks BJ, Just calling it as I feel it.
My Grandfather was a good 'old' mechanic and I grew up around car engines, spanners & grease guns but I'm not much good at it, just the basics, I did however inherited the 'OLD' bit - my brother inherited all the other skills. I step in when he slams his fingers in the car door or slips with a screw driver etc. I just love this "Older Medics in EMS" site I get a cackle from time to time. Cheers Grizzly

I am new to Tulsa and will be going to EMT/B school here with Medic to follow, I have already been an EMT/B in the state of IL but I was stupid and didn't keep up on my classes. I need to know what type of work schedules do the ambulance companies around the area have. Also I would like to know about each company that is in the area, I am use to working for private ambulance companies that run 24hrs on and 48 hrs off, I really love that aspect of that and we also had quarters to return to when we had down time. I would appreciate any information that you can give me to help me with the choices that I have to make here in the near future.

I like your attitude B.J., some people forget that you need more than medical knowledge to make a good job outside;-)

For those with a more visual approach to things, here is a link to a page that provides an excellent metaphor for the way homeopathy and other anti-science works. http://www.jakearchibald.co.uk/homeopathy/
