As someone who's taken two different national standardized tests as both paper and computer (NREMT-B and the MCAT), the computer versions are God sends.

The MCAT, which is not an adaptive like the NREMT, cut tests times from 10 hours (the first time I took it one test center took over 12 hours due to a fire alarm going off) as well as allowed the AAMC to increase test dates from 2 per year to over 10 per year.

I took the NREMT for initial certification a little over 4 years ago and took it again earlier this year for the recert by exam option. The first time took me a little over two hours including prep time while this one took about 30 minutes including prep time (test shut off around 60 questions).

Computer based tests are awesome.

I was freaking over the practical "rapid assessment" part of the test and of course...that was my first station that day! The CBT does bite! I had to take it twice and there were questions I was asked that NOTHING to do with EMS! Remember on your practical exams, you HAVE TO verbalize EVERYTHING you are doing, even though they see you do it,you have to say it.

Dear God!!! What is up with that new computerized NREMT test??? I guess it's punishment for those of us who let our certs lapse several years ago! Anybody know what the actual pass fail rate is on them? I passed first time up, but I really doubted it -- and the weekend before the results posted was sheer torture! LOL
Anyway, I'm glad to be back in the EMS field again.

I remember reading about a research project that found that between two weeks after class to a month after class was the best time to take the cognitive exam. I can't remember were I read that though, probably PEC.

i do not think so & i think that you would have to take the whole recert class all over aver agin & then try taking the national registry exam
