No disagreement, KC.

My post is in response to Jodi's, where she asks why the fire service is actively opposing inclusion of private sector medics in the death benefits bill. I can't answer for them, as I see no good reason for their position. The action speaks for itself.

Skip,
I have read that press release and I agree that in some but not all cases that Fire Based EMS is a good way to go for the citizens; however there are places in the great nation that fire service can't provide care due to district lines. We all know that as fire prevention has dropped the number of fire the Administration looks for ways to bolster their run numbers and they see EMS as their saviors, because no matter how we teach to eat right, stop smoking, reduce you stress the general population will not heed our requests. Now Jodi makes the point the fire service is all about the bucks. She is probably right but the private and public EMS providers are also about the green, but without the green we can’t provide services to the public. We as educators must educate our practitioners that it is about patient care first then reimbursement second. You can run a successful EMS business using this model. Fire Service as the only providers of EMS, it is a pipe dream, because it will not fit in all cases.

Back in 1969 Phx Fire wanted to work fires not EMS. Then that changed in the 1980s when big cities found DOT money in it. In the 90s Fire started a chain of events making private EMTs less, and Fire more trained with thier own EMT Fire classes. If a goverment group can cause a question in another groups care who wins?
It is all about the money, less about the care.

I would like to repectively ask what is the argument for that? How can a National Association with private and municipal members that have the same proffesion be compensated differently? If a private Ambulance Provider and I die in a fire helping a Firefighter the family of the FF and mine would be compensated but the Private provider that died doing the same job as me would not be compensated for their families well being after the accident. Why should their family not be given a monitary amount to help with their funeral expenses and childrens education? Are we not all here because we love to help people? You have worked for private industry how would your family have been taken care of during that time if you had died? I want everyone to be respected for the job they do. To be recognized for the commitment and sacrifice that they provide to our communities. Now I understand that every association can and needs to take a stand for their members and the best actions for them so these are the questions that I would inquire.

You may be interested to note that the International Association of Firefighters and the International Association of Fire Chiefs EMS Section are opposing inclusion of non-governmental EMTs and paramedics in this legislation.

EMS has lost several respected colleauges this year! I hope that each of us will remember to thank the folks you work with and live with because you never know when they may be gone. NEAMT is trying to change legislation to represent all providers weather private owned, or municiple owned. We want everyone to have a voice and sometime Congressional leaders need to be reminded that we all take care of the sick and injured with the same care! Please check our web site for more information on the legislation we are working on for you now! www.NAEMT.org

As a newly-licenced paramedic, I also agree that the current system is flawed. My clinicals alternated between extremely good and a few situations where I was the most-senior person on the truck...as a student. The problem isn't limited to the civ...

doc, You are also forgetting the relative call volumes and the effect they have. Law enforcement is the busiest function (crime fighting) so the cops have the least time to devote to other, non-crime-fighting functions. That makes it intutively o...
