Comment by Tim "Doc" on January 12, 2012 at 8:20am One thing for everyone to remember is that when using the American flag on the casket as Will mentioned the Union (or blue field with the stars) is placed so it falls over the left shoulder of the deceased. The casket should always be carried feet first, this applies to both pall bearers and how the casket is moved in the hearse.
Once the casket is placed for display, either in the chapel, church, or grave side, care should be taken to ensure the casket is positioned so that the deceased's head is to the left as viewed by the family. This will ensure that when viewed, the flag is displayed properly with the union to the top left.
