The mission of the California Association of Emergency Medical Technicians is to serve the prehospital EMS care providers of California by presenting networking opportunities, offer continuing education, work with CAAEMT partners to give discounts on services and products, and represent its membership during discussions that will readily affect their practice and protocols.

Well, its been a while since I have posted on Jems Connect. I would like to hear from more people that have made EMS a career. There are 58 people that are following this tread....There has to be some stories out there!

Being on the other end of the pay, as a EMS compnay owner, paying the personnel is the biggest expense of operating a EMS service. I have had as many as 50 employees, every Friday I had to have available tens of thousands of dollars for payroll. I always paid a bit above what others were paying in the Houston area & provided the second job for many HFD paramedic & EMTS, plus I used a lot of the TDJC (Prison EMS) folks as their 2nd job. With EMS companies having to strive for a decent collection rate especially with 40% of the people having NO insurance, or not qualifying as to reason for the ambulance was many times denied by Medicare & Medicaid it is hard for any EMS to pay what a person might be worth. Raises tended to go to employees who didn't bitch everytime they were late getting of late. It's hard to get off on time if a call comes in 30 minutes before the shift ends & you are still on duty. Someone has to go. With only 12 units, many times the next available unit will have to answer the call. EMS pay will increase only when every EMS has all the money they need, but I don't see that happening. God bless,

Hello Everyone! Glad to be here. I have been in EMS for a while and have done patient care for 29 years now - I still love it. EMS is indeed in your blood (and other places). I couldn't imagine going back to anything else. I wish I could figure out how to make the "Powers That Be" understand that we are a group of devoted, dedicated and skilled PROFESSIONALS who damn sure deserve a much higher pay scale. We save lives yet can barely afford to live one. Most of us have to carry 2 full-time EMS jobs just to get by. We are always so exhausted it's no wonder our health fades fast. I bitch and gripe about this yet I wouldn't trade my chosen career in EMS for anything! There are not words for the wonderful feeling it brings when we do our job well and actually make a difference in this world.

Well I have been distracted for a few weeks, I am the Chief union steward for our union and I have been having to deal with a non-union supervisor who is taking shifts away from road crews for herself. Why do some people feel they can get away with so much shit, or feel they are above the rest of us. I am not a square, but rules are put into place to protect the majority.

I have been in EMS for 32 years, i have the same butterflies in my tummy on each and every run, i still feel the rush, and love every minute of it. I still have the same excitement as i did the first day i started. Hmm something wrong with me they say. ha ha. its not just a job, its a lifestyle. and a career. I love every happy,sad moment of it. What a unique career. My children were all born into EMS although only 3 out of 4 have decided to follow the footsteps of their mom and dad. What a great profession!!!They love it just as much as i do!Is just in your blood!

I have been in EMS for 19yrs full time and I still love it ! My best friend is my partner second to my husband who was born into the fire service. I am the human sponge and love it that I learn something evertime I go to work !!!!
