New Editor, Same Standards

We recently said goodbye to our dear friend, Mannie Garza, the founding editor of EMS Insider. We thank her for 21 amazing years of service to EMS in journalism and the EMS community. Although she is officially retired, she plans to continue to contribute as a freelance writer and consultant.

As of the September issue, we have a new editor for the first time since the publication's inception. We are pleased to welcome Jennifer Doyle, who has a host of EMS experience and will carry on our tradition of integrity, accuracy and excellence in compiling, analyzing and reporting on developments, issues and trends relevant to EMS chiefs and administrators.

Jennifer and the rest of the Insider team will post news and tips here. We'll also start discussion threads on controversies and priority issues that matter to you -- the manager/supervisor. Join in!

Cardiac Science Notifies AED Customers of Nationwide Voluntary Medical Device Correction

November 14, 2009
Cardiac Science Corporation [NASDAQ: CSCX] is initiating a voluntary field correction after it was determined certain automated external defibrillators (AEDs) may experience a rare product issue in which the AED may not be able to deliver therapy during a resuscitation attempt. Device failure may affect resuscitation of the patient, which could lead to serious adverse events or death. These AEDs have electronic components which may fail and the failure may not be detected by the device’s periodic self-tests. See link below.

FEMA Announces Public Outreach Efforts And Comment Period Extension For PS-Prep

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today a series of public meetings that will be held to discuss the DHS Voluntary Private Sector Preparedness Accreditation and Certification Program (PS-Prep).

PS-Prep is a partnership between DHS and the private sector that will enable private entities—including businesses, non-profit organizations and universities—to receive emergency preparedness certification from a system DHS created in coordination with the private sector.

The purpose of these meetings is to provide the public with an opportunity to engage in dialogue with DHS staff and program managers regarding an October 16, 2009, Federal Register Notice (74 FR 53286) announcing DHS’ intent to select three standards for adoption in the PS-Prep program.

The dates, times (local time) and locations of the public meetings are available at the link below.

Anthrax Guidance Posted on Federal Register; DHS Requests Comments

The below link to the Notice of Availability of “Proposed Guidance for Protecting Responders During the First Week Following a Wide-Area Anthrax Attack” has been posted to the Federal Register.

Purpose
This document provides policy recommendations for protection of personnel responding to a wide-area anthrax attack from exposure to Bacillis anthracis spores. A Federal interagency working group, consisting of subject matter experts in biodefense, infectious diseases, and occupational health and safety, has developed this draft consensus guidance regarding appropriate protective measures for responders in the immediate post-attack environment of an aerosolized anthrax attack. This proposed guidance statement reflects the most current understanding of the unique environment that will exist after a wide-area anthrax release. These recommendations will evolve with stakeholder input, scientific developments, and availability of new environmental monitoring techniques.

The Department of Homeland Security requests your feedback on this document, “Proposed Guidance for Protecting Responders’ Health Following a Wide-Area Anthrax Attack”. Your feedback will assist us in finalizing this guidance informed by user experiences and operational feasibility. While overall comments are valued, critical feedback in the areas of defining tiers as a strategy for determining risk of exposure, the use of an activity based approach rather than occupational specialties, and feedback on options for ensuring appropriate medical countermeasures are immediately available to the responder community is sought.

I have also attached the documents located at the link for your convenience.

DATES: Comments must be received by November 27, 2009.
