Disaster medicine is more than just responding to hurricanes and earthquakes. What about local incidents that become more than just an EMS call?

I've recently become a board member and secretary of the Coalition for Tactical Medicine (CTM). We'll be providing information on tactical EMS training and offering scholarships when this is all put together. I'd love to know what things you would consider for a minimal level of competency. NY-5 Disaster Medical Assistance Team Recruiting Medical Providers -

When disaster strikes, what role can you play? As a skilled medical provider, your expertise could be an invaluable, lifesaving resource. The federal government’s National Disaster Medical System provides medical teams during disasters or other events where the local medical-response capability is insufficient.

You can be part of one of these teams.

The system is currently recruiting members for the NY-5 Disaster Medical Assistance Team based out of Long Island. The team is actively looking for clinical medical providers with backgrounds in emergency medicine and critical care for intermittent Federal work:

-Physicians
-Mid-Level Providers (Nurse Practitioners/Physician Assistants)
-Registered Nurses
-Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians
-Respiratory Therapists and Technicians
-Mental Health Professionals - Social Worker/Behavioral Health/Chaplain

What is a Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT)? -

DMAT is part of the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS), which is a federally coordinated system that augments the Nation's medical response capability.

A DMAT is a group of professional and para-professional medical personnel (supported by logistical and administrative staff) designed to provide medical care during a disaster or other event.  DMATs are designed to be a rapid-response element to supplement local medical care until other Federal or contract resources can be mobilized, or the situation is resolved. DMATs deploy to disaster sites with sufficient supplies and equipment to sustain themselves for a period of 72 hours while providing medical care at a fixed or temporary medical care site. The personnel are activated for a period of two weeks.

Worst case scenario, you may be. If it gets bad enough it's all hands on deck! Just heard ugliness is heading for St. Louis now. 30% of Joplin is damaged.

We're on the May DMORS but for the first time in 7 years I'm not on call. Twister land Kansas.... Hope the sirens work!

Kevin, exactly right. It may come to that though. Waiting to hear from my people on the Missouri state team. I'm sure they're assisting with evacuations. What's troubling is that weather in Texas looks bad today and some areas (Kansas) may have a worst weather pattern tomorrow. Up to 30% of Joplin is damaged (theweatherchannel)

Actually if anyone responds, as the state has likely requested federal assistance, it will be the teams on the ESF-8 rotational schedule and likely not MO-1, as their home state is affected. With a relatively small number of deceased, those can likely be handled within the state by state resources, yet the federal team is ready IF requested by the locals and the state.
Agree with Sam on this one. Bad deal 89 so far this morning.
