Hey all, any comments on self regulation? Currently in Manitoba, we are in the first stages of getting self regulation. I'm sure there is pros and cons for same, but pls send feedback.

we have one 8 hr 5day a week paid shift
and a 24hr 'on call' shift paid 11.43 hrs per 24 hrs on a 3-2-2-3 rotation between the two teams.
we are working HARD and having this 'on call' schedule abolished and having only 12hrs shifts. soon,,,,,soon.

We run a 7 hr paid, 17 on call 6 on 2 off shift. Its the union minimum in the province. not a good shift. we have been trying to change to a 6 on 4 off, but the region won't budge on hiring a 4th person part time.... A neighbouring service works a 5-5-4 shift. 12hrs paid, 12 hrs on call.

Our rural service is 8 hour shifts and 16 hours paid on call. If any crew exceeds 16 hours in the vehicle they are taken off the road for 8 consecutive hours with pay though.

In Manitoba......... not uncommen to have 12 hours paid.... then 12 hours oncall for 4 days...... yes fatigue is a concern..... these shifts happen in the rural setting though. This has been the norm since I have been in the field.

I do believe that there are some bases in NS that run 24hr shifts. Maybe one of the other NS medics can confirm this.

Research would probably focus more on fatigue in general.

Do EMS in Canada work 24hr shifts? Is there any research in the Canadian EMS community that 24hr shifts are dangerous?
