I would have to disagree with ADPH. While there's examples of greatness in all states, the overall challenge of EMS in Alabama make it very difficult to compare with others due to the rural nature of the state. However, my experiences with EMS in Alabama are very mixed. That's not unusual, but the regional aspects of EMS in Alabama do not compare to those of G.A. or S.C. EMS in Alabama needs to be given a shot in the arm (couldn't help myself) in central support and medical control. Too many EMTs in this state are not allowed to operate as EMTs using the National Standards (such as intubation) provided through the NREMT doctrine. I see it all the time.

As for a National Registry for First Responders? D.O.T. has provided certification for years. I think Alabama should promote National Registry, but mandate D.O.T. first responder. You have to be careful not to alienate the volunteers. From my experience, EMTs in many cases are treated as first responders by their medical control, but at least they are getting paid for their duties.

I've seen EMS progress from the ocassional EMT with first aid providers all the way to EMT-P lead medics with EMT-I's as their partners, or in some cases dual medic units in high volume call areas. At the end of the day, EMS needs to provided at the highest abililty for each community. Medical Control needs to remember that everyone in their respective community needs the highest level of care at the time of need.

My first responders are invaluable on a scene when I am working on the ambulance. I would like them to be licensed so that there is standardized training from department to department, plus it would give our volunteers a sense of accoplishment!

I honestly think that they need to look into licnse first responders it could be a good thing but then again it could be a bad thing. I'm scared that you will have one first responder who will think that they are everything. When in fact they can't do very much. I know I like having my first responders show up to help with the pt.

According to ADPH Alabama is one of the leading states in EMS. I would love to see the state be more aggressive toward some funding initiatives for First Responders including Rescue Squads that do not transport. I would also love to see them LICENSE First Responders. Anyone else want to see that?

I have to agree with you Micheal!

Doing pretty well. Wish we could get more Alabama EMS providers active on this site and throughout the state as a whole. EMS is behind the times here in this state, and EMT's/Medics need to get more involved with the state office and the regions.

How is everyone doing? Alabama seems to be a little short in personnel in here.

Hey Kathy I was starting to wonder were you where. Not much happening around here. I went that the ITLS class week and it was a great class. I've missed a few calls the last few days cause I had to help move my unlce from Madison Co. so I was out of the area. I bet it was cold in KY with the ice storm. I know the other morning everyone called me and said it was snowing and being that I have lived in Germany and seeing what a really snow storm is I really just launghed. Anyways welcome back. Hope to hear from yall later on.

doc, Your EMS myopia is showing. You're viewing this entire thing through the eyes of "only EMS counts" to you. Show me two paramedics in a car that can attack a structural fire, or any other fire larger than an incipient one that can be handled...

doc, When those private businesses run those big vehicles on emergency responses with the legal right to disregard traffic laws, then your example will apply. Until then, it doesn't.

Tom, It's been a while, but I have seen the 5th (brown) lead that actually was a bipolar lead designed to add MCL1 to the monitor selection. It is a poor substitute for an actual 12 lead ECG with unipolar chest leads, regardless.
