JEMS Connect - EMS Emergency Medical Services

Social and Professional Network

I was looking to see what items an EMS provider has in the way of benefits or how organizations, states, and municipalities are working to retain all levels of public safety workers. Even if is not offered, if it is merely an idea, Id be interested in hearing some things from all.

As part of a large county government, we are unable to do many of the targeted retention and recruitment incentives that are available to free-standing EMS agencies such as private companies or independent government authorities. On the other hand, we have some things built in that some of these agencies do not have, like state/local government retirement, funded 401k, health, life and disability insurance, etc.

Our efforts have been focused on the following:

1. Developing and maintaining a positive image for the organization, through conference presentations, articles in journals, etc. Keeping the agency visible as a progressive, aggressive place to practice paramedicine.

2. Providing and encouraging recognition of good acts and deeds - encouraging supervisors and peers to use the available internal recognition program, as well as the county's customer service awards and other available programs.

3. Maintaining our commitment to providing the very best tools, equipment, and physical work environment that we can afford. Replacing ambulances before 100,000 miles, good quality monitors and biomedical equipment, etc.

Fingers crossed - it seems to be working. We are currently at full staff, with applications still coming in.

Well, the benefits are good, you can participate in a pension plan, there's excellent health insurance, the pay is very competetive for this area. Other than that, I don't think there's a big push on retention in my service. You wanna be here, cool. You wanna go, there's the door. I don't know if it's because in this county there's alot of expansion by this service and maybe they'll focus more on other things once expansion is complete, who knows. But I've never really seen much of a retention program in any of the four services I've worked, some being great services, and some being not so great.

As a newly-licenced paramedic, I also agree that the current system is flawed. My clinicals alternated between extremely good and a few situations where I was the most-senior person on the truck...as a student. The problem isn't limited to the civ...

doc, You are also forgetting the relative call volumes and the effect they have. Law enforcement is the busiest function (crime fighting) so the cops have the least time to devote to other, non-crime-fighting functions. That makes it intutively o...
