Mr. Heightman recently posted "No Heroes" regarding NBC's New Show "Trauma". He ends with "Johnny and Roy, please don't watch this show. Stop by my house and we'll do shots of Ipecac instead."

I so badly want to not like this show. I want to tell you the CPR is bad, or the Captain Versed Medic was terrible. But...it was not as bad as it could have been. I would like to point out that many shows are not based in reality. CSI, Law and Order, and Rescue Me all come to mind as "mindless" entertainment. That is what we hope for TV to be. Entertainment. Want education? then watch PBS.

What have shows like CSI done for Law Enforcement and crime scene investigators? What has Rescue Me done for recruiting at NYFD?

Any publicity is good publicity and EMS needs some right now. Jamie Davis, Greg Friese and I interviewed Actress Aimee Garcia who plays helicopter pilot Maria Benez right after the premiere on Monday night. We also talked with Sebastian Wong from SFFD. Want to know what they said? Listen to the show and find out.

I had to watch the first episode to judge for myself. It was the first and last time I will watch. Boycott the program and send emails to the producers, actors and TV stations.

Im with you Chris, I really dont understand the people with total disdain for the show. Its about people being too sensitive, or insecure. People are scared of looking bad to the public which is understandable. BUT, I think people missed the point of this show by one hundred miles or more. The public is not watching this show for an accurate portrayal of the job we do! Your right, its entertainment, period! This was never meant to be an accurate account of our job! Im just glad it shows that we are much much more than a quick taxi ride to the hospital! Come on guys! Can we not support something that shows we do more than drive an ambulance!?

Good point, I hadn't thought of it like that.

I don't like the notion that telling the public that we're all adrenaline fired control junkies that trach every trauma patient, act unprofessional, and endanger our patients for bragging rights is somehow better than telling them we're all just ambulance drivers. Both are very dangerous and unrealistic expectations of EMS. Emergency Managed to appropriately portray EMS at the time and be entertaining, it's not like Trauma couldn't do the same thing, unfortunately, it doesn't. I absolutely agree with the NAEMT's position letter on this show. The problem is John Q will base his impression of EMS on this show: For christ sakes, CSI has everyone believing that each city runs multi-billion dollar crime labs and take DNA evidence on everything from murders to infidelity. Go ahead, watch an episode of CSI with a cop or a crime lab tech. It's a hillarious learning experience.

I would definitely support Trauma if it even a little more accurately portrayed professional behavior and skilled care that's accurate to the prehospital environment. Unfortunately, as it stands now it's no better than a Michael Bay Blammorama with Instant-Drama-Just-Add-Tracheotomy appeal.

Joe, do you have some mango chutney to go with those red herrings? There are many reasons to combine fire and EMS, and many good reasons to not combine fire and law enforcement. Track record of most fire/law enforcement combination departments -...

So the entire stance that you've taken that fire/EMS saves money on support costs are really a lie then?

Most of the places that tried combination fire/police services were small towns or mid-sized cities. Most of those places didn't have lots of administrative staff to begin with. The fire/LEO combinations mostly ended up just being police departme...

See... doc... we've hashed this out before. EMS and fire support services are somehow magically different when compared police support services. Completely different 'skills' needed to sign checks, do background checks (I'll admit that police chec...
