When kids approach you and say, "I want to be just like you when I grow up," what do you tell them about the EMS profession?
Don't tell them you get to give shots. ;-)
FYI: EMS Today speaker Keith Widmeier will be discussing this at 3:45 p.m. on March 8 at EMS Today. Sign up at www.emstoday.com.
I tell them that I love my job even after 26 years. I also tell them it takes it's toll on your body and mind because of the type of jobs we go to. I mention it's one of the worse pay jobs in the Emergency Services and in Health Care.
If they want to become wealthy then they should look at becoming a doctor.
If they want lots of career options both in their own country and abroad then they should become a nurse.
But, if they want to have the excitement of the unpredictability of health care from serious trauma to holding a little old ladies hand who has social needs then there's not greater job that EMS.
I’ll tell them how to be a good human being not like me only. I’ll tell them the EMS profession is all about saving the lives of the people who are often depended upon the instant reaction and comprehensive care of emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics.
