Gabapentin (brand name Neurontin) is used in the analgesic role for post-herpetic pain. This is the pain, sometimes excruciating, that follows an attack of shingles.
It can also be used for other neuralgias.

Permalink Reply by dr-exmedic on January 28, 2011 at 4:15pm It wouldn't work for musculoskeletal back pain, but it's prescribed quite often for neuropathic back pain--i.e. that caused by a herniated disc or spinal stenosis. It's an off-label use, as (I think) is its use for diabetic peripheral neuropathy pain.True, but I've never heard of it being used to treat back pain. He has no hx of shingles, so I thought it was a little strange for him to be prescribed this drug.
