While I was getting a med Hx on one of my soldiers he said he had been Rx gabapentin for his back pn. Has anyone heard of gabapentin being used as an analgesic? If so, what for?

Gabapentin (brand name Neurontin) is used in the analgesic role for post-herpetic pain.  This is the pain, sometimes excruciating, that follows an attack of shingles.

It can also be used for other neuralgias.

True, but I've never heard of it being used to treat back pain. He has no hx of shingles, so I thought it was a little strange for him to be prescribed this drug.

It wouldn't work for musculoskeletal back pain, but it's prescribed quite often for neuropathic back pain--i.e. that caused by a herniated disc or spinal stenosis. It's an off-label use, as (I think) is its use for diabetic peripheral neuropathy pain.
That makes sense. Thanks.

And it works wonderfully for nerve pain caused by bulging and/or herniated disc's! I can attest to that! :)
