Regions Hospital - St. Paul, MN
Joe, if you actually read the law that applies to Paramedics in a Hospital or ER facility in Tennessee, the wording will terrify you. It basically states that a Paramedic can perform anything a Physician signs off on them to do. Other than Paramedics, it takes a MD, PA or APN to place a chest tube, perform surgical airways, or RSI. (Paramedics and MDs are the only two that I know of that most places will allow to use Etomidate or Diprovan)
As for starting and transporting blood, I've worked for services where we've actually started blood on scene while extricating a patient entrapped in a thresher. They actually brought it from the hosptial to scene. Starting and administering blood (Atleast O-, non specialized factor blood) is part of the initial education curriuculm, although you'll be hardpressed to find a non-critical care service or specialty service that does it.
The whole point of this isn't to start a bitching arguement between RNs and Paramedics, in fact, I'm doing my pre-reqs now to get my RN. But, the whole design factor behind a paramedic is flexability and the ability to train to perform specialized skills that are needed for the environment they are in - most often times training and reenforcement that RNs do not get.

Cocks head to side. Raises eye brow.
Really? Higher scope? I don't think it's really fair to compare scopes between RNs and paramedics to begin with. After all, how many paramedics can hang (note: hang and transport with are two separate things) blood products?
There are ONLY two semi-true cities in Oklahoma, Tulsa, and Oklahoma City,. There are many hospitals in the burg's and ruals area's. With rare exception Basic-EMT's, EMT-I's or Paramedics are NOT welcomed. Its a nurses market for jobs, so more than a few of these RN's called in with "cat had clap" or "I don't feel like coming in today" why lie about it. Yea, I know tons of angry replies from the few RN's who really can't make it in for what ever reason. No, its not a typo EMT- Basics and EMT-I's are welcomed with Paramedics. Depending on the hospital 90% of the medics are active on R.A.T. teams as part of the job description in the E.R.,. NO, they are NOT just pushing the code cart (Resp usally does that). How's the pay? In this state most get $20/hr plus and most importantly REAL BENIFITS you can use and oh my! 401 K's and get ready for this!!!!! In Oklahoma, just like numerous other places they will pay for and give you shifts while in 2nd year RN! Yes, we have several colleges that have Paramedic seats set aside for second year RN just like the LPN's. Yes, there are extra steps as a Paramedic you have to take for that seat, but we have the seats now. Are there some hard feelings with some RN's, sure mostly we are cheaper than most R.N.'s and the other normal stuff the few who complain about medic have. Go on line find a hospital and come to Oklahoma, low cost of living, good place to bring up kids and have a good life.
Samuel, sounds great, I will look into that! Any recommendations on a good hospital to work for? I would think OK City would be more for me than Tulsa...

I don't do fire. I am about to graduate with my medic but due to horrible motion sickness, i am looking for another way to use my certification. I also plan to get my RN but don't want this to be a waste of time...

The pay usually isn't very good for those who DO respond to calls either...
Um, in most hospitals, Paramedics are employed as transporters and ER techs. They start IVs, do blood draws, EKGs, take vital signs and assist nurses. That's it, no meds or invasive procedures. Very few hospitals allow paramedics to perform at their level of training. (I can count on my hand the ones I know of in Tennessee that allow an expanded scope of practice, even though Paramedics can function above the level of an RN)
Jolie Miller said:Thanks Earl and Robert, out of curiosity what is the scope of practice for paramedics in the ER in PA? Is the pay respectable?
