I am looking for hospitals that hire Paramedics to work in the ER. I am NOT looking for a hospital based ambulance service... Please don't forget the name of the hospital and city/state where its located. Thanks!

Joe, if you actually read the law that applies to Paramedics in a Hospital or ER facility in Tennessee, the wording will terrify you. It basically states that a Paramedic can perform anything a Physician signs off on them to do. Other than Paramedics, it takes a MD, PA or APN to place a chest tube, perform surgical airways, or RSI. (Paramedics and MDs are the only two that I know of that most places will allow to use Etomidate or Diprovan)

As for starting and transporting blood, I've worked for services where we've actually started blood on scene while extricating a patient entrapped in a thresher. They actually brought it from the hosptial to scene. Starting and administering blood (Atleast O-, non specialized factor blood) is part of the initial education curriuculm, although you'll be hardpressed to find a non-critical care service or specialty service that does it.

The whole point of this isn't to start a bitching arguement between RNs and Paramedics, in fact, I'm doing my pre-reqs now to get my RN. But, the whole design factor behind a paramedic is flexability and the ability to train to perform specialized skills that are needed for the environment they are in - most often times training and reenforcement that RNs do not get.

Cocks head to side. Raises eye brow.

Really? Higher scope? I don't think it's really fair to compare scopes between RNs and paramedics to begin with. After all, how many paramedics can hang (note: hang and transport with are two separate things) blood products?

Most Pittsburgh hospitals have paramedics in the E.R.

There are ONLY two semi-true cities in Oklahoma, Tulsa, and Oklahoma City,. There are many hospitals in the burg's and ruals area's. With rare exception Basic-EMT's, EMT-I's or Paramedics are NOT welcomed. Its a nurses market for jobs, so more than a few of these RN's called in with "cat had clap" or "I don't feel like coming in today" why lie about it. Yea, I know tons of angry replies from the few RN's who really can't make it in for what ever reason. No, its not a typo EMT- Basics and EMT-I's are welcomed with Paramedics. Depending on the hospital 90% of the medics are active on R.A.T. teams as part of the job description in the E.R.,. NO, they are NOT just pushing the code cart (Resp usally does that). How's the pay? In this state most get $20/hr plus and most importantly REAL BENIFITS you can use and oh my! 401 K's and get ready for this!!!!! In Oklahoma, just like numerous other places they will pay for and give you shifts while in 2nd year RN! Yes, we have several colleges that have Paramedic seats set aside for second year RN just like the LPN's. Yes, there are extra steps as a Paramedic you have to take for that seat, but we have the seats now. Are there some hard feelings with some RN's, sure mostly we are cheaper than most R.N.'s and the other normal stuff the few who complain about medic have. Go on line find a hospital and come to Oklahoma, low cost of living, good place to bring up kids and have a good life.

Samuel, sounds great, I will look into that! Any recommendations on a good hospital to work for? I would think OK City would be more for me than Tulsa...

I don't do fire. I am about to graduate with my medic but due to horrible motion sickness, i am looking for another way to use my certification. I also plan to get my RN but don't want this to be a waste of time...

The ones I know of pay pretty well, but that's just my area.

Jolie Miller said:
The pay usually isn't very good for those who DO respond to calls either...

Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College, PA. They respond in chase cars to assist BLS units all over the county (except State College which has their own ALS service). When in the ED, they perform everything within their scope of practice, and I believe also respond to all arrests on the floor. I've known some guys (and gals) that have worked their, they get their skills as sharp as skills get. Plus the other really cool thing is they get to follow their patients through the ED, and get a admitting/discharge diagnosis to compare against their field impression every time.

Chance Gearheart said:
Um, in most hospitals, Paramedics are employed as transporters and ER techs. They start IVs, do blood draws, EKGs, take vital signs and assist nurses. That's it, no meds or invasive procedures. Very few hospitals allow paramedics to perform at their level of training. (I can count on my hand the ones I know of in Tennessee that allow an expanded scope of practice, even though Paramedics can function above the level of an RN)

Jolie Miller said:
Thanks Earl and Robert, out of curiosity what is the scope of practice for paramedics in the ER in PA? Is the pay respectable?

OK, OK...I'll buy each side a round of beers if we can all go sit down and talk this out reasonably. Let's avoid this fist fight before it starts. It's been hashed out here already, it's over, let's keep it there. We're all special, we're all highly trained, life-saving angels, etc. etc.

We just recently got over a painfully drawn-out PAID vs. VOLUNTEER thread on FFN.com....I don't want to wade through another battle of people who, like the pros and jolly volleys, SHOULD be on the same team.

Thanks Blair, so your saying at Mount Nittany you not only work in the ER, you respond to ALS calls in a fly car? Any idea what the starting pay is in this position?

And to Chance, I know that paramedics are hired as ER Techs, I understand that a lot of hospitals do not allow you to perform to your level of training. But that would be the EXACT reason I started this thread! I am looking for the ER's that DO allow you to do your skills! I know they are out there, I just have to find them!

Hi everyone, I have been working a Fly Car now for 2 years. I also like the concept. In fact, the hospital that I am working in (Bangkok, Thailand) is the only hospital base ambulance that operate this type of vehicle with multi-tasks.

If you work in a "fly car" or "first responder" this is the place for you. Say hello, get to know each other, share experiences good or bad. A good place to vent or just learn what we all do in our regions.

Very interestingly, how do you apply them (ice packs) on the patient ?
